Every January, a quiet rush happens in Bangladesh that most people never notice. Thousands of students fill in an online form for a Hungarian government scholarship — and then a smaller number of them carry a printed copy of that same form to a box in the reception room beside Gate No. 2 of the Secretariat in Dhaka, before 5:00 PM on the deadline day. Miss the box, and the online form counts for nothing.
That is Hungary in one image: a genuinely affordable European degree, wrapped in a process with small, unforgiving details. If you are researching a Hungary student visa from Bangladesh 2027, this guide walks you through what the Hungarian authorities actually require, what it costs, and — just as importantly — what nobody selling Hungary tends to tell you.
To study in Hungary from Bangladesh you do not apply for a "student visa" — you apply for a residence permit for the purpose of studies, submitted through the Dhaka office of the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi at the VFS centre on Gulshan Avenue. The procedural fee is EUR 110, the decision comes within 60 days, and the permit is valid one to three years.
Is there a Hungarian embassy in Bangladesh, and where do you actually apply?
There is no Hungarian embassy in Bangladesh. You may see it written on consultancy websites that you "apply at the Hungarian Embassy in Dhaka" — that embassy does not exist. Bangladesh falls under the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, which operates a Dhaka office through VFS Global.
In practice this is good news. Since early 2025 you no longer have to travel to India: the VFS Global centre in Dhaka accepts Hungarian D-type (long-stay) applications in the Study and Family Reunification categories, and the official checklist used at that counter is headed "Dhaka Office of the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi — Hungarian Visa Application Centre of VFS Bangladesh."
VFS Global's Hungary visa application centre in Dhaka is at Nafi Tower, 5th Floor, 53 Gulshan Avenue, Dhaka, handling D-type study and family reunification applications. Appointments are booked online through the VFS Bangladesh portal for Hungary. Confirm the address and booking link before you travel — visa centres relocate.
What exactly are you applying for — a visa or a residence permit?
This is where most Bangladeshi applicants get confused, and the confusion costs people money. Hungary does not issue a long-term "student visa" in the way the UK or Malaysia does. According to Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP), you submit a single application for a residence permit for the purpose of studies, and that application already contains the visa request. You do not file a separate visa application.
If the permit is approved, the consulate issues you a type "D" entry visa. That visa is single-entry, allows a stay of no more than 30 days, and is valid for three months. Its only job is to get you into Hungary so you can collect the actual residence permit card — which, notably, is posted to your university's address, not yours.
Two clocks start the moment you are approved, and both catch people out. If you do not enter Hungary within three months of the approval, the approval simply lapses and your right of entry ends. And if you are refused, you have only eight days from delivery of the decision to appeal — an appeal filed late, or without stated grounds, is dismissed without any examination of the merits.
| Item | Amount | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Residence permit + entry visa | EUR 110 | At the mission (Dhaka/New Delhi) |
| Appeal against refusal | EUR 160 | At the mission |
| Permit extension in Hungary | HUF 26,000 | Enter Hungary platform |
| In-person application in Hungary | HUF 39,000 | NDGAP regional office |
| Stipendium Hungaricum holders | Exempt | Fee waived for study permits |
How much does it really cost to study in Hungary from Bangladesh in 2027?
Hungary is affordable by European standards, but "affordable" is not "cheap", and self-funded students should budget honestly. Published tuition at the University of Debrecen — one of the universities Bangladeshi students apply to most — runs from about USD 6,000 to USD 7,500 a year for non-medical bachelor's programmes, with medicine far higher.

| Programme | Level | Tuition/year |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science | BSc | USD 7,000 |
| Business Administration | BSc | USD 7,000 |
| Civil Engineering | BSc | USD 7,500 |
| Biology / Chemistry | BSc | USD 6,500 |
| Data Science | MSc | USD 7,500 |
| Pharmacy | PharmD | USD 8,000 |
| Medicine | MD | USD 16,900 |
| Dentistry | DMD | USD 17,500 |
On top of tuition there is a USD 150 application fee and a USD 350 entrance exam fee, neither of which is refundable. And there is one rule that applies to you and almost nobody else.
The University of Debrecen publishes a section titled "Special regulations for Bangladeshi citizens": where the tuition fee is under USD 10,000, Bangladeshi students must pay the full year's tuition plus a general deposit before the university will release the visa-supporting documents. In other words, the money leaves Bangladesh before the permit decision exists. Tuition is refundable if the residence permit is rejected — but the seat reservation portion is not refunded if the application is cancelled. Read that distinction twice.
What is Stipendium Hungaricum, and how do Bangladeshi students apply?
Stipendium Hungaricum is the Hungarian government's scholarship programme, and it is the single biggest reason Hungary shows up in Bangladeshi search data at all — searches for the scholarship by name run at roughly half the volume of "UK student visa" from Bangladesh, which is remarkable for a country most families cannot place on a map.
What makes it different from most scholarships is the two-portal structure. You are not competing in an open global pool; you are nominated by your own country's Sending Partner. In Bangladesh that Sending Partner is the Ministry of Education (Secondary and Higher Education Division), which publishes its own parallel notice on shed.gov.bd — with its own deadline, its own paperwork, and, in the 2026/27 round, a physical hard-copy drop-box at the Secretariat.
Full tuition exemption; a monthly stipend of HUF 43,700 (about EUR 110) for bachelor's, master's and one-tier master's students, paid 12 months a year; a free dormitory place subject to capacity, or HUF 40,000 a month towards rent; and supplementary medical insurance up to HUF 65,000 a year. The call itself states plainly that in bigger cities, especially Budapest, the housing contribution "would not cover the full amount of rental costs."
Timing, honestly labelled. The 2026/27 call closed on 15 January 2026 at 2:00 PM CET, with nominations by 15 March and results at the end of June. The 2027/28 call had not been published when this guide was written, so treat a mid-January 2027 deadline as an estimate based on the published 2026/27 calendar, not a confirmed date. Watch stipendiumhungaricum.hu and shed.gov.bd from October 2026 onwards, and confirm both deadlines before you plan around them.
Which documents does the Dhaka centre actually ask for?
The embassy's own checklist for study applications is longer than the generic lists circulating online, and it contains two Bangladesh-specific requirements that trip people up: MOFA attestation on your birth certificate and on your most recent academic certificates.
- Completed residence permit application form and the studies appendix, signed
- Valid passport issued within the last 10 years, with at least two blank pages, plus all old passports
- Certificate of admission from the Hungarian institution
- Proof that the tuition fee has been paid
- Birth certificate in English, MOFA attested
- Academic certificates in English — most recent ones MOFA attested
- Language certificate proving you can follow an English-taught programme
- Sponsor's bank statement for the last six months, plus a declaration of financial support and proof of relationship
- Proof of accommodation in Hungary — dormitory confirmation or a lease
- Comprehensive health insurance, with proof of payment
- Police Clearance Certificate, CV and a signed motivation letter in English
- Flight booking, valid travel insurance, and a signed statement undertaking voluntary exit if refused
Two practical warnings. First, the counter accepts original documents only, and asks you to bring a complete extra photocopy set including a full copy of your passport. Second, the checklist still links to bmbah.hu for the application form — an old address for the immigration authority, which now publishes its forms at oif.gov.hu. Download the form from the current site, not the dead link.
Can you work while studying in Hungary?
Yes, and the allowance is unusually generous. Hungarian law lets holders of a study residence permit work up to 30 hours per week during the study period, and full-time for up to 90 days a year outside the study period. For comparison, most EU study destinations cap students at 20 hours a week.
That said, do not build your budget on it. Wages in Debrecen or Pécs are modest, English-only jobs are competitive, and a student who works 30 hours a week while carrying a full engineering load usually ends up doing neither well. Treat work rights as a cushion, not a funding plan — and remember that failing to progress academically has a direct immigration consequence, which we come to below.
What happens after you graduate?
Hungary offers a residence permit for the purpose of seeking a job or starting a business to graduates whose intended job or business matches the level of the studies they completed. It is worth knowing its limits precisely:
- Maximum validity is nine months, and it cannot be extended
- You must apply from inside Hungary, via the Enter Hungary platform, at least 15 days before your study permit expires — you cannot apply once it has lapsed
- During those nine months you can move on to a Hungarian Card, an EU Blue Card, or a guest self-employment permit
- You will need either a registration certificate from the national employment body or a signed letter from a Hungarian company confirming employment starting within three months
Nine months is shorter than the UK's Graduate Route, but it is a real, codified route — and the deadline discipline it demands is exactly the kind of thing a student handles badly alone and easily with help.
What are the honest downsides Bangladeshi students should know?
Hungary is sold enthusiastically in Bangladesh, and the enthusiasm skips over four things that matter.
You cannot bring your family. NDGAP states it flatly: a person holding or applying for a study residence permit shall not be granted a residence permit for family reunification. A married student cannot bring a spouse on this route. The only exception is a child born in Hungary during the permit's validity.
Study years do not lead to permanent residence. Holders of a study permit may not be granted a national residence card. The study years are not a PR clock — you would need to switch to a work-based status first.
Falling behind academically is an immigration risk. NDGAP may refuse an extension, or revoke the permit, if you fail to obtain your degree within one and a half times the standard length of the programme. A three-year bachelor's therefore has an effective four-and-a-half-year ceiling.
The scholarship stipend is a contribution, not a salary. HUF 43,700 a month is roughly EUR 110. The Hungarian government's own call for applications says so in as many words: these provisions "are only a contribution to the living expenses."
On apostille versus attestation. Bangladesh joined the 1961 Apostille Convention on 30 March 2025, but five EU states — reported as Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Finland and Germany — objected to Bangladesh's accession, so apostilles are not universally accepted across Europe. Hungary does not appear on the objection lists we could find, but we were not able to render HCCH's own objections page to confirm it directly, so treat that as unconfirmed. In any case the embassy's current Bangladesh checklist asks for MOFA attestation — follow the checklist, and ask the mission in writing before substituting an apostille.
What does Eduvisa see in real Hungary files?
The pattern we see most often at Eduvisa is not a weak student — it is a good student who treats a two-track process as a one-track process. They complete the Tempus portal application beautifully and miss the Ministry of Education's separate submission entirely. Or they secure admission, pay a full year's tuition and a deposit under Debrecen's Bangladesh-specific rule, and only then discover that a sponsor's six-month bank statement does not tell a coherent story, or that a certificate went to the wrong attestation desk. None of that is about intelligence. It is about sequencing, and sequencing is the part a family cannot easily judge from the outside.
