Every August, the same conversation happens at our office. A student walks in with a good CV, decent IELTS and a plan to start in Malta "this October". Then we open the Identità checklist together and the room goes quiet — because the deadline that mattered passed in early July, and nobody told them. Malta is not a country where you can be a month late and still make it. So this is the Malta intake calendar 2027, written for Bangladeshi students, with the dates that are published and the ones you have to calculate yourself.
Malta's main 2027 intake starts on Monday 4 October 2027, when University of Malta lectures begin for first-year students. Bangladeshi students need a long-stay D-visa, and Identità requires the application to be submitted at least 9 weeks before the course start date — around 2 August 2027. Non-EU application deadlines to the university itself fall months earlier, usually by end of June or early July.
When does the 2027 academic year actually start in Malta?
The University of Malta has published its 2027-28 dates, so these are not guesses. First-year students begin on Monday 4 October 2027; continuing students start a week earlier, on 27 September 2027. The opening ceremony is on 4 October.
The first semester runs to Saturday 5 February 2028, with a Christmas recess from 20 December 2027 to 2 January 2028 and examinations from 17 January to 5 February 2028. The second semester runs 7 February to 28 June 2028, with an Easter recess from 10 to 23 April 2028. Those dates come straight from UM's important dates page.
If you are looking at the February 2027 entry instead, the relevant dates sit in the 2026-27 calendar: the second semester runs 8 February to 25 June 2027. UM describes this February entry plainly as an intake held "on a smaller scale".

What are the real application deadlines for Bangladeshi students in 2027?
Here is the part most students get wrong. Malta publishes two different deadlines, and the one splashed across most consultancy websites is the wrong one for you.
For the October 2026 intake, UM's late application deadline was 15 September 2026 at 14:00. But the deadline for non-EU applicants requiring a visa — which is every Bangladeshi student — was 1 July 2026 at 14:00. That is ten and a half weeks earlier. If you read "September deadline" on a competitor's page and plan around it, you have already lost your intake.
MCAST works the same way. Its portal for third-country nationals not yet residing in Malta closed on Tuesday 30 June 2026 for courses starting in October 2026. MCAST does allow a maximum of 10 working days after the deadline to supply missing documents; beyond that, incomplete applications are simply not processed.
As of August 2026, MCAST's own two pages disagree. Its International Students page says applications for international applicants "open in October 2026" with a deadline of "30th June 2026" — a window that closes four months before it opens. Its International Applicants page makes the real position clear: the portal was open until 30 June 2026. We flag this because students plan around whichever page they land on first. Always confirm the live date in writing with the institution.
Why is the non-EU deadline three months earlier than everyone else's?
Because Malta's visa process is not a straight line from you to the embassy. Identità's Central Visa Unit (CVU) publishes rules that make the institution part of the process, and this is the single most under-explained fact about studying in Malta.
According to the CVU's General Rules and Obligations, the educational institution submits a list of accepted students to the CVU before the visa process begins. The CVU runs preliminary checks, communicates an approved list to the relevant consular post, and then tells the institution which students may submit an application and at which submission point. The CVU states plainly that its clearance "does not equate to an approval of the visa application".
Read that again, because it changes your planning completely: you cannot simply get an offer letter and book a VFS appointment on your own schedule. Your name has to travel through your institution to the CVU first. That batch step is why the university closes non-EU applications a full quarter before lectures start.

How early must you book your Malta visa appointment from Bangladesh?
The rule is fixed and published. Identità's Documentation Required for Student National Visa checklist (version 2.1, dated 13 August 2025) states that the application "must be submitted at least 9 weeks before the commencement date of course". For a 4 October 2027 start, nine weeks earlier is 2 August 2027 — and that is the latest acceptable date, not the target.
The same checklist sets out several things that quietly control your calendar:
- Your passport must have 10 months' validity — renew early if yours is close.
- Your entry flight must be no more than two weeks before the course commencement date.
- You must show accommodation for the first 14 nights after arrival, in your own name.
- Bank statements for the last 3 months plus a recent bank certificate are required.
- Medical and travel insurance with minimum €30,000 cover, valid for the Schengen area and for study purposes.
- Every document must be submitted in English, and translations must come from Malta's approved translators list.
The checklist requires funds of "at least 75% of the national minimum wage for every month of study". Malta's minimum wage was set at €229.44 per week from 1 January 2026. Converted to a monthly figure, 75% works out to roughly €746 per month — around €8,950 for a twelve-month course. That monthly arithmetic is ours, not Identità's, and Malta revises the minimum wage annually, so the 2027 figure will be higher. Treat this as a planning number and confirm the current rate before you fix your bank balance.
Verify before applying: the 2027 non-EU deadlines for UM and MCAST had not been published when this guide was written in August 2026. The dates marked "estimate" above are based on the 2026 pattern and should be confirmed directly with the institution. Visa fees, minimum wage figures and processing times also change without much notice.
What does a working month-by-month timeline for October 2027 look like?
This is the sequence we actually build for students, working backwards from 4 October 2027.
- Sep – Nov 2026: shortlist and check recognition. Pick institutions registered with MFHEA, and start the qualification recognition process for your Bangladeshi certificates. UM opens online applications from the November before the intake.
- Dec 2026 – Feb 2027: sit IELTS and assemble academics. Transcripts, certificates and translations take longer from Bangladesh than students expect, especially when an institution asks for attested copies.
- Mar – May 2027: submit university applications. Earlier is materially better — your name has to reach the CVU list, and a late offer letter cannot be rushed.
- Jun – early Jul 2027: hit the non-EU deadline. Assume end of June for MCAST and early July for UM until the 2027 dates appear.
- Jul 2027: unconditional offer, then move immediately. UM's International Office advises starting the visa process as soon as you receive your unconditional letter of acceptance.
- By 2 Aug 2027: submit the visa application. Nine weeks before 4 October. Book the appointment as soon as your institution confirms you may submit.
- Aug – Sep 2027: insurance, accommodation, flights. Book accommodation covering the first 14 nights and a flight arriving within two weeks of the start date — not earlier.
- Late Sep 2027: travel and register. Then apply for the residence permit after arrival, which is what actually covers the rest of your studies.
UM's International Office explains that a Maltese D-visa is issued for more than 90 days but no longer than 365. In practice many students receive a 91-day D-visa — which does not cover a full academic year. You are then guided to apply for a Maltese residence permit after arrival, renewable every year subject to academic progression. Since 1 March 2024, every third-country national studying in Malta for more than three months needs a long-stay visa, including nationals of countries that normally enjoy a 90-day waiver.
Is Malta's February intake realistic for a Bangladeshi student?
Usually not, and it is worth being straight about that. UM confirms a February entry exists, but describes it as being "on a smaller scale". Fewer programmes accept February starts, and the same 9-week visa rule plus the CVU clearance step still apply — compressed into a shorter window that overlaps the December recess, when both universities and offices in Malta slow down.
Where February genuinely works is research degrees. Most Master's degrees by research and all doctoral programmes at UM have more than one entry point and accept applications at any time of year, with a research proposal as part of the application. If you are a postgraduate research candidate, your calendar is far more flexible than an undergraduate's.
What goes wrong most often for Bangladeshi applicants?
In our experience at Eduvisa, the failures are almost never academic. They are calendar failures. A student waits for a conditional offer to become unconditional before starting document work. A passport with seven months left goes unnoticed until the checklist is opened. A family fixes the bank balance in July instead of April, so the three-month statement history does not support the certificate. Each of these is survivable on its own; together they push a student from October 2027 to October 2028.
One Bangladesh-specific detail is worth planning around: Malta has no visa section of its own in Bangladesh, and Maltese national visa applications from Bangladesh are handled through the VFS Global Malta service for Bangladesh. Appointment availability at a single centre in Dhaka is a real constraint in July and August, when everyone is trying to hit the same nine-week wall. Applicants have previously reported the centre operating from Gulshan and a service charge on top of the visa fee — but confirm the current address, charge and appointment process on the official VFS page before you plan around it.
Identità's checklist lists the student national visa fee as €100 for applicants aged 12 and over with a standard appointment (within three weeks), rising to €150 for a next-day appointment. At an indicative rate of about ৳135 per euro, that is roughly ৳13,500 and ৳20,300 respectively — an estimate only, since the rate moves. Fees are payable by credit or debit card, so make sure international payments are enabled on the card well before your appointment.
How does Eduvisa handle the Malta calendar differently?
We build the timeline backwards from the course start date, not forwards from the day a student walks in. That means we know in September which students realistically have an October intake and which are better served by planning a full year ahead — and we say so, even when it is not what the family wants to hear. We also stay in the loop with the institution through the CVU listing stage, because that is the step where a quiet delay costs an entire year.
Then there is the part that starts after the visa. Institutions in Malta are obliged to report non-arrivals, unexplained absences and changes of accommodation or course to the authorities, and Identità may request monthly attendance records. Students who drift in their first semester in Malta are not just risking their grades. That is one reason we stay involved after arrival rather than closing the file at the airport.
