Scroll Facebook for ten minutes in Bangladesh and you will meet the ad: "Study in Europe for only 8 lakh — no IELTS, no service charge!" For a family that has saved for years, that number is designed to feel like relief. The truth is less catchy: studying abroad has a real price in every country, but the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive route is enormous — often more than ৳30 lakh over a first year. Knowing that gap is the cheapest way to study abroad from Bangladesh in 2027.
For most Bangladeshi students in 2027, Malaysia offers the lowest realistic first-year budget — roughly ৳12–18 lakh including tuition and living. Cyprus and Italy sit close behind, and Italy can become the cheapest of all once income-based public tuition and a DSU scholarship apply. Malta is mid-to-high, and the UK costs the most up front.
Which is the cheapest country to study abroad from Bangladesh in 2027?
Among the five destinations we work with every day — Malaysia, Cyprus, Italy, Malta and the UK — Malaysia usually delivers the lowest total first-year cost, with Cyprus and Italy close behind. But "cheapest" is not one answer for everyone: it depends on your study level, your subject, your family's income and which scholarships you can realistically win.
You may have heard that some European countries charge no tuition at all. That is true — Germany's public universities, for example — but those routes come with their own trade-offs: intense competition for English-taught seats, language requirements and long timelines. This guide sticks to the five countries where we process files week in, week out, so every number below comes from cases and sources we actually track.
How much does the first year really cost in each country?
Here is the honest comparison — tuition, living costs and the money you must show for the visa. Asterisked figures are estimates or from secondary sources; treat them as planning bands, not quotes.
| Country | Tuition / year | Living / month | Visa proof-of-funds | Rough first-year total* |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Malaysia | RM15,000–45,000* (public–private) | RM1,500–2,500 (Kuala Lumpur) | Bank statement via EMGS — case-specific | ~৳12–18 lakh |
| Cyprus | €7,000–10,000 before scholarships | €600–1,000 | ~৳10–12 lakh cited — unconfirmed* | ~৳14–20 lakh |
| Italy | €500–4,000 public, income-based* | €700–1,000* | €10,179.85 (≈ ৳14.3 lakh) — confirmed | ~৳12–20 lakh |
| Malta | €7,000–12,000* | €950 minimum — real costs usually higher | €950 × months of stay | ~৳22–32 lakh |
| UK | £14,000–25,000* | £740–1,090 outside London | £1,171–1,529/month × 9, held 28 days | ~৳35–55 lakh |
Two things jump out. First, Malta — often marketed as a "budget" destination — lands mid-to-high once realistic living costs are counted; the University of Malta itself says the €950 monthly visa minimum is not enough to live on. Second, the UK's premium is real, but so is what it buys: globally ranked degrees and a post-study work route the other four cannot fully match.
Why can Italy turn out cheapest in the end?
Because Italy is the only one of the five where your tuition is set by your family's income. Public universities calculate fees from an ISEE Parificato — an income certificate Bangladeshi families can obtain — and for most of our students that means roughly €500–4,000 a year, not the €10,000+ sticker price of private options elsewhere.
Italy's regional DSU grants have recently ranged from about €2,500 to €7,900 a year depending on region and band — some include housing and meals. Win one, and Italy is not just cheap: it can pay you to study. Amounts and deadlines change with each region's annual bando, so verify the current one before you count on it. Our DSU scholarship guide explains how it works.
The catch: at the visa stage you must still show €10,179.85 for the year (the standing figure for recent academic years, confirmed via the Italian Embassy's 2026 guidance). That is money you must prove, not money you will necessarily spend — a distinction that confuses many families. Pre-enrolment runs through the official Universitaly portal, and Italy also uniquely accepts extended-family guarantors — grandparents, siblings, even uncles and cousins.
How much can scholarships really cut your costs?
Meaningfully — if you apply early and read the fine print. Real examples from our recent research, all from university sources: UCLan Cyprus publishes 30–40% programme scholarships and up to 50% first-year merit awards; University of Nicosia gives first-year merit discounts judged on your HSC or A Level results; APU in Malaysia offers 10–30% merit awards by grades; and Malaysia's government MIS scheme covers full tuition plus RM1,500 a month for postgraduates from Commonwealth countries — Bangladesh qualifies through Commonwealth membership.
APU's 2026 merit deadline was 31 July with awards on a first-come basis, and Cyprus universities assess merit at admission automatically. Applying six months early is often worth more than a better SSC grade — the budget runs out before the intake does.
Can part-time work cover your living costs?
No — and any consultancy that budgets your living costs out of your future part-time salary is setting you up for trouble. Treat work income as a supplement. The rules differ sharply: the UK, Italy and Cyprus allow around 20 hours a week in term time (Cyprus restricts sectors and applies a waiting period — verify current rules before relying on it), and Malta's limits should be checked with Jobsplus for your case.
Malaysia allows part-time work only during semester breaks and holidays longer than seven days — not during the semester. If your budget depends on earning in Malaysia term-time, your budget is wrong. Plan Malaysia on family funding alone, and treat break-time work as bonus.
One more honesty check: visa officers never count projected work income as proof of funds. Your bank file has to stand on its own.
Which hidden costs do Bangladeshi students forget?
The advertised numbers are never the whole bill. From files we handle at Eduvisa, these are the lines that surprise families most — budget for them from day one:
- UK Immigration Health Surcharge — £776 per year, paid with the visa application, plus the £558 visa fee
- Student file with an AD (Authorised Dealer) bank in Bangladesh — mandatory for legally remitting tuition abroad
- Document attestation and translations — education board, notary and ministry steps add up
- VFS service charges in Dhaka on top of embassy fees (Cyprus files are decided in New Delhi, adding courier time)
- Cyprus "Pink Slip" residence package — around €265, plus UCLan's €5,000 refundable non-EU deposit before the visa
- First tuition instalment often due before visa documents are issued (MCAST in Malta requires this, for example)
- Flights, initial accommodation deposit and the first month's setup — commonly ৳1.5–2.5 lakh
Full UK maintenance rules are published on the official GOV.UK student visa pages — worth reading before anyone quotes you a "package price".
What money mistakes get student visas refused?
More refusals come from money paperwork than from grades. The classic errors: showing "borrowed" funds that appear in the account days before applying; large unexplained deposits; and sponsor income that cannot be documented with tax returns or trade licences.
Your maintenance funds must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the statement's end date must fall within 31 days of your application. A single day's dip below the threshold restarts the clock — we have seen strong applications refused on exactly this.
How do you actually plan a budget that works?
What we see at Eduvisa, file after file: the students who land smoothly are rarely the ones with the most money — they are the ones who planned twelve months out and matched the country to their real budget instead of stretching for a brand name. Here is the sequence we walk families through:
